Saludos Lawrence Public Schools community.
In last month’s message I promised things were going to get very busy, and they certainly did. We have plenty to highlight, update, and celebrate as the end of the school year approaches:
- All schools and offices are closed this Monday, May 25 due to the Memorial Day holiday. In honor of those who died serving our country, the City of Lawrence will hold a ceremony at 9am in Bellevue Cemetery.
- The annual public hearing for next year’s proposed Lawrence Public Schools budget will take place this Wednesday, May 27 at 6:30pm in the auditorium of the South Lawrence East complex (165 Crawford St.). Any member of the community is welcome and encouraged to come provide comment, ask questions, and see a detailed presentation of the budget before it is provided to the City of Lawrence for consideration. You can also watch live on LPS YouTube.
- Last night I was honored to speak to another record-setting number of L-Pin recipients at Lawrence High. The L-Pin is LHS’s highest academic honor – awarded to juniors and seniors who achieve a grade point average of 3.8 or higher – and for the second year in a row it has been earned by more Lancers than ever before. We also celebrated 135 scholarship recipients (thanks to the LHS Alumni Association) and earlier this month welcomed 200 new LHS recipients of the state Seal of Biliteracy, and 16 inductees to the National Arts Honor Society. Congratulations to all our celebrating students!
- It has been a great spring sports season. I want to offer a very special congratulations to the LHS girls flag football team on an incredible first season in this fast-growing sport, and good luck to boys volleyball and baseball. Volleyball is heading to the state tournament after winning its second consecutive league title this week, and baseball needs two wins this weekend to join them in the postseason.
- It was also a busy and successful spring arts season, with our District Music Concert, the “Dream Big” District Art and Self-Portrait Show, and LHS Theater’s Evita. Check out our LPS website and LPS social media accounts for coverage, and be on the lookout for Lawrence students collecting yet more awards for their artistic talents.
- Finally, spring in LPS is also busy with preparations for next school year, and we’re extremely excited about new opportunities and major partnerships being planned at LHS this fall in the fields of banking and technology. Stay tuned for announcements!
Only a little over four weeks left until summer. Thank you all for making it a great finish, and have a wonderful holiday weekend.
Respectfully,
Ralph Carrero
Superintendent
